Retrofit

______ A huge part of the national journey to reach Net Zero, will involve improving our existing domestic and non-domestic building stock to reduce the energy required to heat them.

Retrofit is inherently sustainable in terms of embodied carbon, saves money on energy bills and creates warmer and healthier homes and workspaces when carried out properly. Almost all buildings can be retrofitted to some extent.

At Carbon Futures, we target energy reductions of 60-80% for an average home depending on what measures are achievable. This is feasible through a scientific approach based on whole building assessments, energy modelling and whole building retrofit plans tailored to each building. We pay special attention to historic buildings and promote creative design solutions.

Our retrofit services combine our skills in architecture, conservation, energy modelling, building physics, and Passivhaus.

What is Retrofit?

Retrofit involves upgrading a building to enable it to respond to climate change and can involve repair, renovation, refurbishment and restoration. It typically involves the installation of several complementary measures to improve the building fabric such as insulation, windows and improved air tightness. This is then complimented with suitably sized and designed heating, hot water and ventilation systems that often include renewable technologies.
